[People’s Daily] China, India become world’s top origin countries of migrants

2018年5月11日

China and India have overtaken the United Kingdom as the world’s top origin countries of migrants, while migrants from China made up the fourth largest population of foreign born migrants in the world after India, Mexico, and Russia, according to the 2018 World Migration Report.

The results were published on Tuesday in the Chinese version of the report and jointly released by the International Organization for Migration and the Center for China and Globalization (CCG) in Beijing.

According to the report, until 2015, there were 244 million migrants worldwide, overtopping the number in 1990 at 153 million. However, the proportion of total migrants remains stable, taking 3.3% of the total world population.

Outward labor migration, particularly from China, means that the subregion is one of the largest recipients of remittances in the world.

In 2015, Chinese-born migrants were the fourth largest foreign-born population in the world after Indians, Mexicans, and Russians, with nearly 10 million Chinese migrants living outside of China. Remittances worldwide in 2016 amounted to an estimated $575 billion, with China receiving $61 billion, the second largest share after India.

Global migration remains a very significant feature in East Asian countries, involving unprecedented flows of people from rural areas to urban centers, the report showed.

China’s internal migration stands out, particularly during the Spring Festival travel season every year—the world’s biggest migration, when Chinese people return back to home for reunion before the Chinese Lunar New Year.

In 2018, 2.97 billion passengers travelled in the 40-day period.

Another prominent internal migration has begun to take shape, as more and more Chinese seniors from the northeast part of the country flock to Hainan in the south to escape the winter cold, totaling 600,000 to 700,000 every year. The migration of elderly people forms a growing trend of local tourism and housing market since 2000.
