The Challenge of “Going Out”
The Challenge of “Going Out” Edited by Henry Huiyao Wang, Ph.D. and Mabel Lu Miao, Ph.D. Published by Springer Nature Access to the book: https://link.springer.com/book/10.1007/978-981-99-3326-6 This book, part of the prestigious Chinese Enterprise Globalization Series, which ispublished by the renowned international publisher Springer Nature, is now available worldwide. Edited by Dr. Henry Huiyao Wang and Dr. Mabel Lu Miao, this series is dedicated to the in-depth study of Chinese enterprises and their pivotal role in globalization. It features insightful monographs that analyze this dynamic phenomenon, offering readers an abundance of up-to-date information on Chinese Outward Direct Investment (ODI) and in-depth case studies spotlighting Chinese enterprises’ global expansion. These comprehensive resources, all rooted in primary research, have firmly established the series as a leader in its field, distinguishing it from similar publications. In an attempt to make sense of the complex process of adaptation that Chinese enterprises must go through in the course of “going out”, this book provides a multidimensional analysis of the driving forces, legal and systemic hurdles, as well as the risks and opportunities that Chinese enterprises must consider as they seek greater fortunes beyond their own borders. Comprehensive surveys conducted on a range of enterprises provide the foundation for an overview of the current state of Chinese companies operating overseas and developing trends in their overseas investment. Specific topics include key challenges that companies face, their strategies and ultimate goals, as well as their practical experience in investing abroad, especially in Belt and Road countries. Also included are the insightful views of experts, scholars and entrepreneurs with a wealth of experience in transnational investment in areas related to the globalization of Chinese enterprises, including regional investment risk, overseas talent strategies, legal and compliance issues, and even the role of technology and the Internet in cross-border e-commerce, just to name a few. It is our hope that this book will help readers better understand the current state of Chinese enterprises expanding globally, but even more importantly, we hope to provide valuable information for individual enterprises looking to “go out”, helping them clarify their investment strategies, make the most of opportunities, manage challenges and take their business to the next level. The Globalization of Chinese Enterprises: Trends and Characteristics and Strategies for Chinese Enterprises Going Global in the Chinese Enterprise Globalization Series have been published in 2020 and 2023 respectively and received broad public praise. This ongoing series of English books is built on the extensive research presented in CCG’s series of “Blue Books”, which have been published annually for the past seven years in collaboration with the Social Sciences Academic Press (China). In 2016, CCG also released China Goes Global: How China’s Overseas Investment is Transforming Its Business Enterprises as part of the “Asia Business Series” by Palgrave Macmillan. This publication featured a foreword by Mr. Long Yongtu, Chairman of CCG’s Strategic Advisory Board and former chief negotiator for China’s entry into the WTO. For many years, CCG has diligently tracked and studied the globalization of Chinese enterprises, hosting numerous forums, seminars, roundtable discussions, and similar events on a yearly basis. These gatherings are dedicated to exploring pertinent topics concerning enterprise globalization, including the Belt and Road Initiative, Sino-US trade relations, and trends in global value chains. Distinguished political and business scholars with rich research and practical experience both domestically and internationally, are regularly invited to participate in these discussions. Through these collaborative efforts, CCG actively seeks innovative pathways for enterprise globalization. This book is structured into five main sections: Part I Policy and Environment Part II Underlying Trends and Influencing Factors Part III Legal and Compliance Concerns Part IV Risks and Opportunities in Investment Part V Notable “Going Out” Case Studies In each of these themed sections, readerswill find insightful essays from renowned experts, including Xinquan Tu, Professor and Dean of China WTO Research Institute, University of International Business and Economics, former Economic and Commercial Counselor He Weiwen from the Chinese Consulates General in San Francisco and New York, Guoyong Liang Ph.D., Economic Affairs Officer at the Investment and Enterprise Division of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) and a Nonresident Senior Fellow of the Collaborative Innovation Center of China Pilot Free Trade Zone, Haoyuan Ding Ph.D., associate professor, doctoral supervisor and assistant dean at the Business School of the Shanghai University of Finance and Economics, Zhile Wang, Director of Beijing New Century Academy on Transnational Corporations and fellow of the Research Institute of Ministry of Commerce, and CCG Enterprises Globalization Research Group and CCG assistant researcher Jingru Zhao. Currently globalization is encountering obstacles and the world economy grows slowly. China firmly believes that the issues impressing could be resolved and the development could be achieved only by appropriately addressing the inequalities brought by the previous phase of globalization and by promoting a more inclusive and sustainable globalization. Despite the increasingly complex and volatile international context and fierce competition in the international market, Chinese enterprises continue to invest overseas, demonstrating their strong willingness to “go global”. It is expected that The Challenge of “Going Out” will be helpful to Chinese enterprises on deploying their international strategies.
