Over the past year, COVID-19 has setback thousands of Chinese students hoping to study abroad, following the closure of English Language testing centres last December. Our reporter Yang Shanshan spoke to Miranda Wang, the managing director of ETS China, about how international study will likely experience a rebound as China’s COVID policies ease.

YANG SHANSHAN, CGTN Reporter : China just relaxed its COVID policy, and also issued lots of policies to support the economy, so what’s the impact on your business and how do you respond to these changes?

MIRANDA WANG Managing Director of ETS China : I think this is definitely great news, and it also sends a very positive signal that China is entering a new phase, which will definitely enhance international communication and provide more opportunities to students who go abroad. ETS China Beijing Test Centre has downgraded our COVID management while maintaining some basic measures like checking the temperature and wearing masks to ensure the safety of the test-takers. We are very optimistic about the future and as we think more testing centres are considering reopening after the Spring Festival. So, we will support them to provide more services, and especially to provide more testing dates for the test-takers. Also in 2020, ETS initiated the home-edition test to serve our students, and this has been greatly welcomed globally. Nowadays, the combination of online and offline testing has been greatly accepted and we will maintain this to provide two options for test-takers.

YANG SHANSHAN CGTN Reporter : In the past three years, lots of students are affected by the geo-politics as well as the COVID-19 pandemic, so what’s the latest trends for Chinese students to study overseas?

MIRANDA WANG Managing Director of ETS China : In the past three years, we see there are some new trends among students when they consider their overseas application. So, first I think the tendency is that we do see there are still a growing number of students considering going abroad. So according to the open door report released this year, China remains to be the major source of international students in the U.S. A significant change is that a lot of students will choose other destinations rather than the U.S. For example, some popular destinations in Europe, the UK, Germany, France, also in Singapore and Hongkong. Second, we do see a lot of students, they choose to study overseas, not only for securing a promising job, instead, they want to improve their personal competence, and to be more confident in a multi-cultural context, so to be a global citizen. There’s also another trend, that is more and more Chinese students, after they study overseas, they will choose to go back to China for work. So this is quite good and positive phenomenon, and we can see that China’s economy has provided a very good environment for our young talents to pursue their dreams in our own homeland.

YANG SHANSHAN CGTN Reporter : What’s your expectation for your future development in China?

MIRANDA WANG Managing Director of ETS China : In the future, we are still very optimistic and we are working closely with our stakeholders and partners in China to help contribute for the process of China’s internationalization of education.
